It all started downstairs

The story of Jounin Kauppa began on 23 March 1950 when Jouni Kaulanen opened a shop downstairs in his home. He ran the shop with his wife Terttu for almost 40 years, serving everyone from loggers to the growing numbers of tourists.

When Jouni started his career as a shopkeeper, there were only eleven homes and three summer villas in Äkäslompolo. One assistant helped out behind the counter during the busiest season. Today, well… there are quite a few summer villas in Äkäslompolo. Jounin Kauppa has become the meeting place and shopping centre for locals and holidaymakers, and even for our dear friends the Swedes. Sampo Kaulanen is the third generation shopkeeper at Jounin Kauppa.
