The battle against climate change starts from Äkäslompolo

Press release 13.3.2008

The greenest village shop in Finland equipped with emission-free cold technology

The rebuilding of Lapland’s largest village shop, Jounin Kauppa in Äkäslompolo, includes fitting it out with the latest answer to heating and cooling by utilising renewable energy sources and cold equipment that releases condensate heat. The shop will also be equipped with a cooling system where the coolant contains no greenhouse gases that are harmful to the environment.

The whole point in planning Jounin Kauppa was to reduce emissions that contribute to climate change and to cut back on ever-rising energy costs. The heating and cooling energy is taken from the ground and air, and the shop’s cold equipment also produces condensate heat.

The shopkeeper is concerned about the environment and climate change. The building technology systems for Jounin Kauppa have been planned and are being installed by Are Oy.

“Jouni wants to use energy sparingly so that there is no need to build new power stations that burden the environment. The equipment has been designed to come in line with Finnish energy and climate policies, in which energy savings plays a key role,” says Jukka Mämmelä the design engineer from Are Oy who planned the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.

The latest application of green cold technology in Finland

The system is unique because it combines all energy sources into one fully integrated system, and it uses renewable sources of energy as well as the energy released from the cold equipment. The flow of energy is utilised efficiently through recycling according to the needs of the shop.

“Nothing like this has been done before in Finland, a shop cold system operating entirely on CO2. The system is a new step towards the future. In this, Are has strong expertise,” says Jukka Myllylä, Regional Sales Manager at Are Oy.

Jounin Kauppa’s answer to heating and cooling

The size of Jounin Kauppa currently under construction at Äkäslompolo is on a grand scale for the area.

Volume: 36,300 m3
Total floor area: 5,894 m2
Useable floor area: 5,810 m2

The heating system introduced into Jounin Kauppa saves on energy and conserves the environment. What makes the solution unique is that internal and external energy sources are channelled into the property via a low-energy centre. All the cold and freezer equipment in the shop use clean and natural CO2 as the coolant. This form of cold technology is used elsewhere in the Nordic countries and Europe.

The entire system supplied by Are guarantees good indoor conditions as well as low energy consumption for high standard shop and business premises. The costs of the investment are not significantly higher than they are for traditional technology.

System operation

All the energy sources are efficiently cycled throughout the year at a low temperature, which guarantees a high heat coefficient (COP) for the cooling systems. Additional energy needed during peak consumption is primarily taken from heat wells, a renewable energy source, where a heat pump raises the temperature to the required level. The low energy sources are boosted with surplus energy from the shop when available, thus increasing low energy output during peak consumption. This function also keeps the condensate heat from the cold equipment at a low level and minimises the amount of additional energy that has to be bought. The necessary cooling energy for the air conditioning is obtained directly from the rock.

The system’s primary components are

shop CO2 cooling system
heat pump centre
low energy heating and air conditioning systems
